Synopsis

HUG is a conceptual short film where we follow a chain link of relationships between people that all share a common need: to be loved. Experience the hardships of these situations while rooting for every character's flaw to resolve themselves. HUG is an inspirational story that pushes the importance of various levels of physical affection in order to achieve true happiness and satisfaction.

Medium Synopsis

HUG is ultimately an exploration of one of the most common human acts of intimacy and affection. Without a single piece of dialog, the film will push for physical body language and facial expression in order to communicate various emotions embedded in the specific relationship as well as individual characters. The structure is pattern driven in such a way that two characters are introduced; their relationship is established (either through prop, flashback, body language communication etc.); the scene is punctuated by a certain type of hug that communicates the overall encompassing relationship between these two characters from that point on. This repeats throughout the progression of the story as we find more links between various peoples’ relationships until the pattern is broken towards the end as an element of climactic surprise and a parallel aspect to reality, putting forth the message that sometimes things don’t turn out the way you expect them to.

The story begins with a Girlfriend and Boyfriend characters. Their relationship is established as straining and unhealthy and they share a “break-up” hug. These two characters are in a way modern Adam and Eve for they set off the chain reaction of hugs to follow within other relationships between people longing for love. We are then introduced to the Boyfriend character even closer by observing his visit to his friend. The relationship is established through body language that reveals the true sexual orientation of the Boyfriend character and gives the audience insight on the reason behind his earlier break-up. Friend and Boyfriend embrace in a personal and close hug that speaks towards their understanding towards each other. In the next scene, Friend is being confronted by his Father, with his Mother on the sidelines, about being gay. Father is furious and storms out, leaving the Mother to try and console Friend by giving him a side hug that’s very impersonal and fake. We are introduced to a few other everyday situations between unique yet real characters. Relationships become more extreme and the hugs more meaningful, whether in a positive or negative way. Finally, in the last scene a Soldier is greeted by his Wife as he comes home from the army. Through earlier scenes we find out that the Wife has been unfaithful and the two share a very undefined and unfamiliar embrace that speaks volumes towards human behavior and morals.
Contact, guilt, sin, betrayal, forgiveness and love. What do different types of hugs mean? What makes the act of hugging sincere, truthful and meaningful? How does a hug affect the other person? Does it impact or change their behavior? See the temptations that drive human morals astray and bring forth unwanted endings to relationships we thought were worth cherishing forever. Discover what it means to love and care through physical manifestations of these feelings. Take a ride along with these ratable characters through their universal situations that we all have or at least will someday experience in our lives.

HUG poster SOLDIER 150x150 About

I was inspired by the goodness of humanity. I always try to see the best in everything and this was just another opportunity for me. The inspirational and touching act of two people hugging has always fascinated me. On the surface, wrapping your arms around someone while they do the same to you is a strange concept to think about. However, that very same wrapping of arms has great healing powers and I believe that anybody's day can get that much brighter with a hug.
The message that I try to send out with my film is that it's important to have a certain amount of physical affection and it's also important to mean it. Nobody likes one armed sideways hugs! So go out and hug and be sure that you're honest! I challenge you to hug at least one person per day.
